Your thyroid gland is located in your neck and is one of our endocrine glands, which means it produces hormones. The thyroid hormones T3 and T4 regulate the body’s metabolic rate and so have far-reaching effects.
When too little thyroid hormone is produced, this is called hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and people will show a number of the following symptoms: tiredness, weakness, feeling cold, constipation, feeling down, inability to think straight, weight gain, dry skin, brittle hair & nails, hair loss, irregular or heavy periods or lack of periods, infertility.
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thryoid)
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is associated with the following symptoms & signs: finding it difficult to relax or sleep, anxiety & irritability, feeling hot, losing weight, enlarged thyroid (goitre), trembling, palpitations.
Thyroid Blood Tests
Blood tests are used to assess thyroid function but the levels considered to be normal vary from country to country and there is some controversy about what levels warrant treatment. Many people feel they suffer from hypothyroidism even though blood tests are within normal limits. Others have low thyroid hormone in blood tests but do not feel any better when prescribed levothyroxine (synthetic thyroid hormone). This situation can arise when there is difficulty converting T4 into T3 (the active version of the hormone), which can be due to nutritional deficiencies or to high levels of the stress hormone Cortisol.
The consequence of all this is that many people find themselves less than completely happy with the conventional treatment of their thyroid imbalance.
A complementary approach
If this sounds like you, homeopathy may offer you a complementary approach and some choice in how you look after your health.
I will encourage you to maintain close contact with your GP (and endocrinologist if you have one), both for tests and to manage any conventional medication. Homeopathic treatment can work alongside this and the approach is broad-based. Homeopaths do not focus on the disease itself but rather the individual person who has the disease. The aim is to treat the person as a whole and consequently re-establish balance in all the organs.
Your homeopathic consultation
At your 1st consultation, I will therefore look at many aspects of your health and your more general characteristics. I will be particularly interested in any significant events that occurred in the 12 months leading up to your thyroid problem and which may have contributed to its onset. Examples would be pregnancy, menopause, whiplash, shock, grief and other strong emotions. We will also discuss whether there might be an autoimmune aspect to your health issues, that is whether your body is attacking its own tissues.
I will explore in depth how your health problems affect you and I am particularly interested in any details that are not typical of all people with your diagnosis. The more peculiar your symptoms, the more likely they are to lead me to an excellent remedy for you, so please don’t be shy in telling me any unusual details!
There is a complex interaction between the thyroid and other endocrine glands, including an important link with the adrenal glands which produce hormones to help us manage stress. As there is very often a prolonged period of stress before a thyroid problem emerges, we may well consider homeopathic and lifestyle measures to help you manage your day to day stresses.
Why should you consider homeopathy?
Thyroid problems, and especially underactivity, tend to emerge slowly as the result of deep-seated problems in the hormonal system and beyond. I will therefore take time to consider many aspects of your health and what may have contributed to the problems you are experiencing, before prescribing remedies carefully matched to you as an individual.
Homeopathic remedies are safe, non-toxic and act gently and can be part of a process of re-establishing overall balance and good health, helping you once again to enjoy life to the full.
